PGDM

(Post Graduate Diploma in Management)

PGDM expands to Post Graduate Diploma in Management, the confusion starts when you see the term Diploma. Many students are of the view that it is a Diploma course and not a Degree. The main reason why postgraduate courses are named as PGDM is because when an Institute is an autonomous body (meaning it is not affiliated to any University) and conducts management courses then such Institutes cannot offer MBA degree. Even IIMs, XLRI’s doesn’t offer MBA degrees they only give PGP Diploma or PGDM since they are autonomous and independent bodies. On similar lines AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is allowing approved colleges to run a PGDM course and the Business Schools offering this PGDM course need not be autonomous, the PGDM course will be autonomous given by the Institute & directly approved by AICTE.

About PGDM Course

The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is an industry-oriented management education with a more practical approach. The course’s curriculum is quite similar to that of an MBA, with the goal of providing management training to students, followed by tough case studies and seminars to prepare students for the industry.

Why PGDM?

Students who desire to pursue a career in management will find the PGDM to be a very rigorous degree. With the ever-changing world, the needs of organisations, institutions, and businesses are evolving as well. Managers, leaders, functional heads, and specialised executives are in high demand all around the world.

  • This course is open to students from any discipline: The PGDM Syllabus is meant to help students of many fields define their careers. For their overall growth, students with a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with the required percentage can enrol in the PGDM programme.
  • Interdisciplinary Course: The PGDM is an interdisciplinary course that combines streams such as management, accounting, and economics to address industry needs. Rather than focusing on a single subject, the PGDM programme provides students with a broad range of expertise.
  • Preparing Future Managers: The country’s demand for excellent managers is growing by the day. Organizations frequently spend a significant amount of money on training and development in order to fulfil industry requirements. The PGDM programme assists students in aligning their skills with the current needs of industries and markets.
  • Leverage on Current Salary or Job Position: The PGDM education aids aspirants in climbing the pyramid ladder. It provides salary increases, promotions, and CV enhancements by keeping up with current market demands.

About Business Schools

In a Business School, you will learn about the importance of human and labour factors in organisations including the structure, design and culture of organisations; management theory; policies and practices; and employment relations. Studying Management as a postgraduate discipline is not only for those who want to be a manager. Management may interest you because you want to understand how an organisation works. At postgraduate level, you will learn about leadership roles and how people function in organisations.

Where Can You Get a PGDM?

Much like a law school or medical school education, the academic content of a business school education does not vary much between programs. However, experts will tell you that the value of your PGDM is often directly related to the prestige of the school which grants it. Every year PGDM offering Business Schools receive rankings from various organizations and publications. These ranking are determined by a variety of factors and can be very useful when choosing a business school PGDM programme.

Why Get an PGDM ?

The main reason to attend B-School is to increase your salary potential and advance your career. Because graduates who hold a PGDM are eligible for jobs that would not be offered to those who hold only normal degrees, a PGDM is almost a necessity in today’s business world. In most cases, a PGDM is required for executive and senior management positions. There are some companies who will not even consider applicants unless they have a PGDM. People who hold a PGDM will find that there are many different types of employment opportunities that are available to them.

Advantages of PGDM

When an Institute secures autonomy they design their own curriculum to be taught instead of following prescribed as in University syllabus. Normally, the syllabus change at University level happens once in either 3 or 5 years. Technically syllabus change affects university affiliating colleges, the books needs to be revised and the faculty needs to upgrade themselves and in the colleges, having autonomy, the curriculum can be updated regularly depending on the need in Industry without approval from any University. Hence one can say that PGDM courses are more Industry relevant, up to date as compared to MBA courses.

What Can You Do With a PGDM ?

PGDM programs offer an education in management along with a more specialized curriculum. Because this type of education is relevant to all industries and sectors, it will be valuable regardless of the career that is chosen after graduation.

Information about the approvals

While opting for PGDM courses, students must exercise caution and check the accreditation status of the college. Colleges offering PGDM courses need to be accredited by AICTE. In case of MBA, the colleges are affiliated to a University and Universities are controlled by University Grants Commission (UGC) and the colleges may also get accredited by AICTE

Ex-PGDM / Ex-MBA

Executive PGDM (Ex-MBA) program specifically targets corporate executives and managers. The program enables them to study and work towards earnings this business degree while continuing to hold their existing full-time jobs. Ex-PGDM students typically possess considerable work experience before entering the program. Ex-PGDM programs are made up of a mix of classroom teaching on evenings and weekends, online tutorials and occasional full-day sessions.

Career advancement and better prospects are primary motivators for executives to embark on this program. Since most of these executives are also working during the duration of the program, they are in a better position to apply the management techniques and best practices learned in the classroom to real-life situations, as compared to traditional MBAs who are in graduate school full-time.

Education delivery using Case Study

Approach in Business Schools Some business schools center their teaching on the use of case studies (i.e. the case method). Case studies have been used in graduate and undergraduate business education for nearly one hundred years. Business cases are historical descriptions of actual business situations. Typically, information is presented about a business firm’s products, markets, competition, financial structure, sales volumes, management, employees and other factors affecting the firm’s success. The length of a business case study may range from two or three pages to 30 pages, or more. Business schools often obtain case studies published by the Harvard Business School & other prominent schools.
